Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Paloma (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects through trypaloma.app (the “Site”) and the Paloma macOS application (the “App”), and the choices you have about it. Questions: trypaloma@gmail.com.
Paloma is presently operated by its founding team as an unincorporated venture. If we incorporate a company to operate Paloma, we’ll update this policy to name that entity.
1. Information we collect
- Waitlist: your email address, if you join the waitlist on the Site.
- Feedback: the text, category, and rating you submit through the App’s feedback form, plus an email address if you choose to include one.
- Device & diagnostic info: app version, macOS version, and device model, sent with feedback submissions and routine update checks.
- A random install identifier: an ID generated on your device, never derived from or linked to your name, email, or Apple ID. It doesn’t identify you by name, but because it’s stable across events we treat it as personal data rather than calling it anonymous.
- Usage metrics: if enabled, metadata about how suggestions perform — which app you were in, whether you accepted or dismissed a suggestion, how long it was on screen, how many characters it was, and how quickly it arrived. This never includes the text you type. See Section 3 for the default that applies to you.
- Suggestion text: only if you separately turn this on, the text you had typed and the suggestion Paloma made are attached to those metrics. This is off by default everywhere and requires an explicit opt-in — see Section 2.
- Site analytics: aggregate interaction data from the Site (page views, clicks).
Your display name, personalization instructions, and on-device suggestion memory stay on your Mac. We don’t collect or receive any of it.
2. How Paloma generates suggestions
By default, Paloma reads nearby on-screen text (via the Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions you grant, and can revoke anytime in System Settings) and generates suggestions entirely on your Mac, using a local model. That text isn’t sent to us or anyone else. Where the App summarizes on-screen context, those summaries are also generated by a local model running on your Mac — nothing is uploaded.
The one exception is the optional “share the text around suggestions” setting. It is off by default everywhere, and only if you turn it on are the text you typed and the suggestion Paloma made sent to our analytics provider, tied to the random install identifier. Before anything is sent, we detect patterns like email addresses, phone numbers, and card numbers and replace them with fake stand-ins drawn from reserved ranges that can never belong to a real person — an email becomes jordan.lee@example.com, a phone number becomes +1 555-0142.
That substitution is a safety net, not a guarantee. It only catches things it can recognize by their pattern: it does not detect or replace names, and it can’t recognize a sentence that is sensitive because of what it says rather than what it looks like. The rest of the text you wrote is sent as you wrote it. That’s why this setting is opt-in, why it’s off unless you turn it on, and why you should only enable it if you’re comfortable with that. You can turn it off again at any time.
3. Usage metrics and your region
Usage metrics (the metadata described in Section 1, never your text) default differently depending on where your Mac is configured:
- In the EU, EEA, and UK: usage metrics are off until you turn them on. Our analytics provider stores an identifier on your device, and under the ePrivacy Directive that requires your consent first — so nothing is stored and nothing is sent unless you opt in during setup or in Settings.
- Everywhere else: usage metrics are on by default, and you can turn them off during setup or anytime in Settings → Data & Privacy.
Turning usage metrics off also turns off sharing suggestion text, since the latter is carried by the former.
4. How we use information
- To run the waitlist and notify you about access.
- To read and act on feedback and support requests.
- To understand aggregate product usage and improve Paloma.
- To prevent abuse and keep the Service secure.
- To deliver the correct app updates.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We don’t sell your personal information or use it for third-party advertising.
5. Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers — for hosting and waitlist storage, product analytics, and processing in-app feedback submissions — to run Paloma. They act on our behalf and don’t get to use your information for their own purposes. We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights or safety of Paloma or our users, or as part of a merger or acquisition.
6. Data retention
We keep waitlist emails and feedback submissions for as long as reasonably useful for the purpose they were collected, or until you ask us to delete them. Analytics data is retained per our provider’s standard window and is tied only to the random install identifier, never to your name or email. On-device data stays on your Mac until you delete it or uninstall the App.
7. Your choices & rights
- Usage metrics: toggle anytime in Settings → Data & Privacy. Off by default in the EU/EEA/UK; on by default elsewhere (Section 3).
- Sharing the text around suggestions: off by default everywhere; toggle anytime in Settings → Data & Privacy.
- Revoke Accessibility or Screen Recording anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Email trypaloma@gmail.com to access, correct, or delete your waitlist or feedback data.
- Uninstalling the App removes all on-device data.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the GDPR or CCPA. Contact us and we’ll honor valid requests within the time applicable law requires.
8. Children
Paloma isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
9. International transfers
We and our service providers operate infrastructure in the United States and elsewhere, so your information may be processed outside your home country.
10. Security
We use reasonable measures to protect information we handle, but no method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Paloma evolves. Material changes will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, come with additional notice.
